So, without further ado, let's grade the performances of some of the top players in the game. I'll be focusing on the players who entered Birkdale in the top 15 of Data Golf, plus a few others for good measure. Remember, these grades are relative to expectations, so two players with the same results might not get the same score.
Ryan Fox and Aaron Rai: The Underdogs Strike Back
Starting with the winners, Ryan Fox and Aaron Rai, both earned an A+ for their performances. Fox, a 39-year-old from New Zealand, showed incredible mental fortitude to claim his first major at Birkdale. His win was a testament to his resilience and a reminder that age is just a number in golf. Rai, on the other hand, grabbed the PGA Championship, his first major win, and in doing so, joined Fox in the elite club of unlikely major champions this century.
Rory McIlroy: A Masterful Victory
Rory McIlroy, the defending champion at the Masters, lived up to the hype with a win, earning him an A. This victory puts him in an elite group of golfers, with only 11 players ahead of him on the all-time major wins list. It's a testament to his consistency and talent that he can go back-to-back at Augusta.
Wyndham Clark and Cameron Young: Streaky Golf, Stellar Results
Wyndham Clark, known for his streaky golf, caught fire at the right time, winning the U.S. Open. He handled the post-victory PR well, but I still can't shake off my reservations about his overall game. Cameron Young, on the other hand, had a breakthrough year, finishing second at the Masters and the Open Championship. He's undoubtedly a top-three player in the world, and I'd be surprised if he doesn't add a major to his name soon.
Sam Burns and Justin Rose: Reputations Transformed
Sam Burns, previously known for struggling in majors, turned things around this year, finishing second in two majors. He's proven he can rise to the occasion, and I expect big things from him in the future. Justin Rose, despite his advancing age, continues to be a force to be reckoned with. He gets a B+ for his efforts, and I'd gladly give up a kidney to see him win another major. Father Time might be undefeated, but Rose is giving him a run for his money.
The Rest of the Pack: Mixed Bag of Results
Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg, Russell Henley, Chris Gotterup, and Scottie Scheffler all had solid performances, earning grades ranging from B to B-. Schauffele, with two major victories under his belt, gets a pass for now, but the expectation is for him to keep pushing for more. Aberg, Henley, and Gotterup showed promise, but they need to take that extra step to truly contend on Sundays. Scottie Scheffler, despite factoring into every major, had a lost year of sorts, reminding us all of the difficulty of winning at the highest level.
Patrick Reed, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa, all earned B- grades. Reed and Thomas had solid seasons, but they're capable of more. Morikawa had a weird season, with a back injury seemingly affecting his performance. He needs to find his form again and get closer to that winning circle.
Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka, both ranked in the top 10, had decent seasons, but expectations were higher. They get C+ grades, with Koepka getting some grace due to his transition back to the PGA Tour. Jon Rahm, Si Woo Kim, and Akshay Bhatia all had lackluster seasons, earning C grades. Rahm, in particular, needs to step up his game if he wants to live up to his reputation as a top-five player.
Patrick Cantlay, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Jordan Spieth all had disappointing major seasons, earning C- grades. Cantlay's record is particularly putrid, and he needs to step up if he wants to be considered among the top golfers without a major. Fitzpatrick had a great overall season, but his major campaign left much to be desired. As for Spieth, well, he is who we thought he was - a decent but unspectacular player.
Cameron Smith and Viktor Hovland had disastrous seasons, earning D grades. Smith, once a top-10 player, is now threatening to exit the top 100, and Hovland, despite a solid season beyond the majors, failed to give himself a chance in any of the four events.
And finally, Bryson DeChambeau, who had a truly disastrous major season, gets a D-. I still believe in his talent, but he needs to get back to the drawing board and work on his wedges and irons.
